My opinion about AI will surprise you

A few months ago, I worked on a project where the client refused to use AI. Cybersecurity, they said. Fair enough. Cybersecurity matters. But their solution was extraordinary. They preferred to spend hundreds of hours of senior professionals’ time… At around $500 an hour… On tasks that AI could complete in minutes. Trust me… even if in my pocket… the money does not pay to waste your time like that… These were some of the best professionals in the country. The client did not trust them. It did not trust its own systems. And it did not know enough about AI to manage the risk properly. So it banned the tool. This reminds me a story. Milton Friedman once visited a public works project in Asia. I think China. They put him in a field and showed him the great work that was being done. Thousands of people were digging a canal with shovels. “Why not use machines?” he asked. “Because this creates more jobs,” the official replied. Friedman answered: “If you want to create jobs, give them spoons.” That client did not ban AI. It bought spoons. Expensive spoons. Held by very expensive people. AI has risks. So does email. So does cloud storage. So does hiring humans. Being professional does not mean refusing to use powerful tools. It means understanding them well enough to use them properly. Look. When I’m asked about AI, I always say the same: You cannot be the professional holding the spoon. And you definitely cannot be the client handing them out.
